Yawa approves Potchefstroom name change

14 August 2007

North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard Yawa,
has approved the application of the Potchefstroom City Council for the name
change of the municipality to Tlokwe City Council as per official notice 6 of
2007 published in the Provincial Gazette dated 7 August 2007.

The amendment substitutes the expression "Potchefstroom City Council"
wherever it occurs in Notice 302 of 2000 and Notice 68 of 2002 which
established the Potchefstroom City Council Local Municipality (NW 402).
According to the amendment, any reference in any other notice or document to
the "Potchefstroom City Council" or the NW 402 Local Municipality" shall be
construed as a reference to the "Tlokwe City Council."

"The approval follows rigorous public participation through organs of civil
society particularly the ward committees, the business sector, etc to
substantiate support for the name change relative to objections. The name
change of the municipality does not in any way include the change of the name
of the town Potchefstroom .The renaming of towns is governed by a separate
process, i.e. the geographic names committee process," stressed MEC Yawa.
