North West MEC for Developmental Local Government, Howard Yawa MEC has
expressed shock and sadness at confirmed reports that Councillor Moss Phakoe of
Rustenburg Local Municipality was shot dead by unknown person/s outside his
home in Rustenburg north around 21h00 on Saturday 14 March 2009.
Yawa has condemned Councillor Phakoeâs murder in the strongest terms
possible and describes it as a cowardly and heinous act that has robbed
communities of a forthright, assertive and hardworking public representative.
While appealing for calm from the community, the MEC has cautioned against
speculation and urged members of the community to come forward with whatever
information that might assist the police in their investigations and lead to
the arrest of the culprit/s responsible.
âWe express our deepest condolences to Phakoeâs family, relatives, friends,
fellow councillors and the party that he represented in council, i.e. African
National Congress on the shared loss of a cadre of immeasurable strength, and
quality.â says Yawa.
Councillor Phakoe was a former National Union of Metal Workers of South
Africa (NUMSA) organiser around Brits and served as member of the erstwhile
Brits Transitional Local Council, Councillor and member of the Mayoral
Committee in Bojanala Platinum District Municipality and Rustenburg Local
Municipality respectively. He was also a former ANC regional executive member
of the erstwhile eastern region and current Bojanala region.
