H Yawa on eradication of informal settlements

Eradication of informal settlements on track says North West
MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard Yawa

7 April 2009

Government will not rest until it has eradicated all informal settlements
and provided decent housing including rental housing to all homeless people,
North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard Yawa
assured residents of Matlosana at the handover of 569 low cost houses held last
Friday in Jouberton.

The 45 square meters face brick low cost houses handed over to beneficiaries
are part of the R98,3 million housing development project spread across
Jouberton Extensions 3 and 22 and Tigane in City of Matlosana Local
Municipality that commenced in September 2008.The project scheduled for
completion in June has thus far created three hundred and eighty jobs and
empowered twelve sub contractors.

"Though we were exposed to elements in our shacks since 1995, our dignity
has been restored through the housing project. We no longer need washing basins
to bathe because our new houses have full length baths. Since we do not have
swimming pools, we enjoy the feel of swimming in them for cleanliness." Nomonde
Mandyongolo (46) said in appreciation.

"Though the democratic government led by the African National Congress (ANC)
inherited a huge backlog in housing when we took over as government in 1994,
even our worst critics concede that the delivery of 3,1 million subsidised
houses, 2,7 million free houses for the poor within a period of 15 years is
unsurpassed achievement in the history of human development. Our delivery track
record has demonstrated an unquestionable commitment to accelerate housing
delivery. Working in partnership with our municipalities, developers and
contractors, we have managed to restore the dignity of our people by providing
shelter to an additional 14 million people." Yawa told the residents.

The project is part of government's housing plan to eradicate informal
settlements by 2014.
