Residents of Atamelang Township outside Delarayville became the first
beneficiaries of a R190 million housing discount benefit scheme of properties
that belonged to the North West Housing Corporation (NWHC) to receive title
deeds on Monday. Tswaing Local Municipality Mayor, Manketsi Tlhape handed over
251 title deeds to beneficiaries on behalf of the North West MEC for
Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard Yawa at a ground breaking
ceremony held at Atamelang Community Hall.
"We are grateful that the provincial department has paid the cost of the
transfer of the properties into our names. The title deeds we have received
have removed the fear of possible eviction that we have had to endure since we
took occupation of the houses in the late 1970âs. The ownership of the
properties guarantees an inheritance for our children and grandchildren as part
of our estate" said Kelebogile Monyatsi (78), one of the elderly
beneficiaries.
In handing over the title deeds, Mayor Tlhape announced that all in all 803
title deeds are to be issued to beneficiaries in the area. A further 189 title
deeds are to be handed over to beneficiaries in the next two weeks while the
balance of 363 title deeds is targeted for hand over by the end of May 2009
after completion of the occupancy audit.
According to Tshepiso Letselela, the Acting Chief Executive Officer for the
NWHC, the residents of the area are to further benefit through a R17,2 million
housing renovation project to upgrade 443 old stock houses inherited from the
old apartheid governments. The corporation is to spend R39 000 towards
renovation of each house to increase its market value. The project is also
expected to create jobs for local sub-contractors and labourers.
Over 9000 beneficiaries spread across North West, Gauteng Free State and
Northern Cape provinces are also in line to receive their title deeds for
properties that belonged to the NWHC as beneficiaries of the housing discount
benefit scheme. The discounts approved by the MEC and the corporation
include:
* goodwill discounts of up to R10 000 per person
* extended discount benefit scheme of R7500 per person
* previous debts on the properties which included instalment and compound
interest.
