Gauteng Social Development calls for assistance for fire victims

More than 80 families displaced by fire

27 August 2007

The Gauteng Department of Social Development together with local ward
councillors are currently assisting residents of Zamimpilo informal settlement
south of Johannesburg with emergency relief.

This is after fires razed the informal settlement and displaced more than 80
families. Emergency relief work started on Sunday, 26 August 2007, where
families were given blankets and temporary shelter in containers.

At the moment the department is co-ordinating efforts to provide relief to
the families with the assistance of two non-governmental organisations from the
area. Food and blankets have thus far been provided.

The department is currently looking at providing additional temporary
shelter for children and parents who could not be accommodated in the temporary
containers. The assistance of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)
have also been called upon to provide temporary relief on-site and transport
for people to be registered for emergency relief. Additional food and blankets
will be dispersed to alleviate the plight of the displaced families under the
cold weather conditions.

The department will appreciate any help in the form of food and blanket
donations.
