Gauteng Shared Service on fight against corruption

The fight against corruption has never been this spirited

5 February 2009

The assertion made by some media commentators that the figures in the fight
to rid government of corruption are gloomy is misleading to the extreme.

According to Mike Maile, CEO of the Gauteng Shared Service Centre (GSSC),
"The GSSC has built sufficient capacity and has overtime put a formidable fight
against the scourge of corruption".

The process of handling the anti-corruption hotline queries is clear about
the steps that must be taken in terms of establishing facts and taking the
necessary action.

The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) operated its own hotline facility
until this was discontinued in 2005, to form part of the nationally
administered hotline.

To date, Gauteng has investigated each case that has been referred by the
Public Service Commission (PSC). In this regard it must be understood that each
reported case must be supported by compelling evidence in order to raise
prospects of imposing the necessary sanctions.

The following figures relate to cases that were closed:
* 30 cases had to be closed because there was insufficient information provided
on the hotline reports
* 21 cases were closed because evidence to support the allegations was
insufficient
* 44 were closed following successful prosecution of the perpetrators and
sanctions imposed accordingly
* Another 70 cases were closed as the allegations were unfounded.

These figures point to the thoroughness with which each of the reported
cases is treated.

We will continue to work with the Public Service Commission in an endeavour
to resolve some of the challenges including:
* Erroneous referral of cases to the GSSC when they in fact relate to other
provinces, national departments and municipalities
* The logging of "same cases" more than once with the anti-corruption
hotline.

"The allegation that anti-corruption hotline reports go unattended is
nothing short of a malicious rumour," adds Maile.
