The Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works have reported
that the demand for learner's license bookings has been significantly reduced
to less than three thousand in the province. This is due to the establishment
of three satellite Learner's license testing centres by MEC Ignatius Jacobs, in
September this year.
The learner's booking system has been receiving great attention from Gauteng
Provincial Government in recent times following major challenges encountered at
various Drivers License Testing centres throughout the province.
According to the latest statistics, the time it takes for members of the
public to secure bookings and get tested for learners' licenses now takes less
than a week whereas it previously took months on end. This was also compounded
by the fact that the department had also been keeping many people on its
booking system in order to help those who had been inconvenienced by the
upgrade of systems. These have since been reliably stabilised.
MEC Jacobs said he was pleased that a corner had been turned on this
important matter of service delivery, also saying that "all necessary steps and
efforts would be taken to ensure more access to public services. We are also
continuing with our work to build more Drivers' License Testing centres in some
of the 20 Prioritised Townships in the province. Indeed, this proves that our
government cares about its people," he said.
One of these centres will be built in Soweto in the current financial year,
and another one in Mamelodi.
Jacobs also said his department was committed to working with all
stakeholders in a drive to eradicate the backlog.
