The Gauteng Department of Housing will achieve its delivery targets as
outlined in 2006/07 financial year. The department's annual report, to be
presented to the provincial legislature on Tuesday, 4 December 2007, indicates
the department has by the end of September 2007 delivered 39 991 out of the 58
552 housing units promised.
The report also indicates that the department has spent 98,4% of the funds
allocated to it. During the financial year under review, the department was
allocated R2,1 billion to achieve its mandate for the year under review. Ninety
percent of the allocated budget is for the Housing Fund, which is a total of
R1,8 billion, and the remainder is for the provision of support services such
as administration, housing planning and research, property management as well
as quality assurance.
Amongst the achievements the department has made are the delivery 373
individual subsidies against a target of 352, representing a 100% achievement,
as well as project-linked subsidies in which the subsidy amount is linked to
the income of the beneficiary and the latter must finance the shortfall. This
also caters for people who are outside the normal Reconstruction and
Development Programme (RDP) requirements, those who earn more than R3 500 per
month.
In her foreword Gauteng Housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane says despite numerous
challenges brought by population growth due to immigration into Gauteng, the
department has been able to deliver houses to the people of the province.
"It is worth noting that the financial year under review had been a
particularly exciting and rewarding year, in which the housing plan for this
province took place," said Mokonyane.
