Gauteng Department of Housing has ensured that all of our people live in
decent, secure and habitable environment. In achieving this goal, five key
programmes have been developed and implemented in Gauteng. Achievements can be
demonstrated as follows:
Urban Renewal Programme
Lives of people have been improved in areas such Alexandra, Evaton and
Bekkersdal, just in Alexandra
* 880 houses have been built in River Park
* 181 houses were built in extension 8
* 1 400 units were built in extension 7
* 520 rented rooms were built on the East Bank
* 52 Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) flats were built in
Marlboro
* 350 social housing units were built in Old Alexandra
* 298 hostel rooms were converted in Old Alexandra
* 4 new schools have been built.
Eradication of informal settlements
122 informal settlements were deemed suitable for in Situ upgrading and
formalisation while others were earmarked for relocation to identified project.
A total of 68 of 122 settlements have already been formalised with additional
56 to be formalised by 2009. So far, 12 informal settlements have been
eradicated. A further 24 are in the process of being eradicated with housing
construction underway. This will bring the provincial total of eradicated
informal settlements to 36 in 2009.
20 Priority Township Programme (PTP)
Since the inception of 20PTP, R4,6 billion has been spent on 387 projects
including the
* upgrading of over 800 kilometres of road
* development of 280 000 residential stands
* beautification of communities
* development of precinct plans in some of the townships to direct and
stimulate investments
* rehabilitation of schools and clinics
* commercial and transport hubs in partnership with the private sector to
stimulate local economic development and hob creation.
Mixed housing development
The flagship projects are being implemented in all regions of the province,
providing over 100 000 housing units. Work is in progress to provide 47 640
housing units in mixed development projects in Pennyville, Chief Albert Luthuli
extension 6, Olivenhoutbosch extension 36, Thorntree View, Leeupoort, Cosmo
City and K206 in Alexandra. Work has also started on another 23 910 units in
Doornkop (Soweto), Chief Mogale (Kagiso) and Middlevlei (Mohlakeng). Plan are
being finalised for another 18 977 units in housing development in Lady
Selbourne, Danville and Willows.
