Former Housing MEC Ms Nomvula Mokonyane is the first woman to be elected as
Premier of the Gauteng province. Premier Mokonyane was sworn-in during the
first sitting of the provincial legislature on Wednesday, 6 May, to head South
Africaâs economic powerhouse.
She takes over from Mr Paul Mashatile a high ranking member of the
provincial government. As she was sworn, the mood was jovial as she was called
to take an oath. Dressed in a silky brown suit, Ms Mokonyane took the oath with
a smile, as the Deputy Judge President of the High Court Jeremiah Shongwe led
the proceedings. Following her swearing-in, members of the house and guests
ululated and welcomed her appointment with an inspirational song, "a ya vuya
amakhosikazi" (women are celebrating).
