Ensuring safe and efficient movement of people and goods

15 April 2009

An efficient system is central to the social wellbeing of residents and to
ensuring that the economy is able to function effectively. Gauteng Department
of Housing has made great strides in improving transport infrastructure and
systems under the umbrella of Evaton Renewal Project. The project has
successfully managed to maintain a balance between promoting development to
address the needs of the people whilst minimising negative environmental
impacts, protecting the environment and contributing to the sustainable of use
of natural resources.

The project was launched in 2004, following a commitment made at a
government imbizo with the community. Key priority areas include upgrading bulk
infrastructure and end engineering services (sewer and water networks, storm
water drainage and street lighting), roads and transport networks and upgrading
housing. The project is being implemented in partnership with private
development companies and local contractors.
