Gauteng Health on recorded meningitis cases

Four more cases of Meningitis confirmed in Gauteng

As part of its established system of tracking developments related to
illnesses such as meningococcal meningitis, the Gauteng Department of Health's
response team has confirmed four more cases in the province of Gauteng:

* One case involves a student from the University of Pretoria who is
currently at Muelnet Clinic.
* One other case is of someone currently residing at the Methodist Church in
Johannesburg and attended at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic
Hospital
* Two other cases are of persons currently attended to at Tembisa Hospital.

In line with established protocols, medication (i.e. prophylaxis) has been
offered to persons in closest contact to the patients as well as educational
material and educational talks. The department has also started an educational
campaign that will involve the use of schools, clinics and hospitals to
disseminate information about meningitis generally and specifically
meningococcal meningitis.
