Gauteng Health on death of three year old girl

Gauteng Department of Health's response team confirmed the death of a three
(3) year old girl on 13 March 2009 due to meningococcal meningitis. She resided
in the Thembasile informal settlement that is near Lenasia South. Parents,
children attending crèche with Thembasile and other close contacts were
provided medication (chemoprophylaxis) as well as educational information on
meningitis.

The department has also started an educational campaign that will involve
the use of schools, clinics and hospitals to disseminate information about
meningitis generally and specifically meningococcal meningitis.
