The head of Liquor licensing in Gauteng, Kenneth Mapengo, has strongly
condemned the latest incident of armed robbery and theft of computer equipment
at the Johannesburg offices of the Gauteng Liquor Licensing unit.
The incident follows the theft of computer equipment at the Ekurhuleni
regional offices two weeks ago.
It is not clear whether the two incidencts are linked but on both occasions
the perpetrators stole computer equipment where information related to the
processing of liquor licenses was kept. Mapengo says no information was lost
and they are working with the South African Police Services to track down the
perpetrators of these crimes.
"We are delighted that no information was lost as we have adequate back-up
systems," said Mapengo. He said the processing of liquor licenses are
proceeding as planned and that those who have applied will get their responses
without any delays.
"We wish to caution those who perpetrate these acts that they will not
succeed in disrupting our work of ensuring that there is effective regulation
of the liquor industry in Gauteng," he said.
Mapengo said he is encouraged by the growing numbers of liquor traders,
including shebeen owners, who are complying with the Gauteng Liquor Act. He
said that the process of amending the Act will be complete by October this
year.
The Gauteng Liquor Licensing Office has so far processed over 17 000 shebeen
applications and all applications will be finalised as soon as possible.
