Despite the call by labour for an escalation of industrial action on the
part of government employees today, government continued to deliver services
with minimal impediment to service delivery in most instances.
This week has seen many public servants returning to work, and outside of
the education sector it was estimated last night that only approximately 20 000
were withholding their labour.
The situation in hospitals across the country has stabilised, and most
hospitals are delivering all critical services, some still with the assistance
of the South African Military Health Services.
It is estimated that in all centres across the country 70 000 workers
participated in the marches, and as of 16h00 we are not aware of any major
incidents.
With regard to the negotiations, the mediators appointed by labour have put
forward a comprehensive proposal which seeks to reconcile the differences
between the parties.
We call on labour to give serious consideration to this proposal, with a
view to resolving the negotiations for the benefit of the employees, the
country and the people whom we have undertaken to serve.
