task team members, who worked throughout the festive season
26 January 2009
Eastern Cape MEC for Roads and Transport, Gloria Barry will host the Eastern
Cape Provincial Task Team Gala Dinner on Monday, 26 January 2009 at 18h30, at
the Wood Brook Military Base, Military Road in East London, where she will be
handing over certificates to the 117 Task Team members for their excellent
service during the festive season, which resulted in a significant decrease in
the number of road accidents and fatalities.
MEC Barry launched this task team, which comprised 100 traffic officers
including new recruits and 17 road traffic safety education officials, in
December 2008 in Uitenhage in an effort to intensify the provincial Arrive
Alive Campaign with a primary focus on:
1. drunken driving (priority number one)
2. reckless or negligent driving
3. moving violations (barrier lines, blind rise overtaking) etc
4. major route selective enforcement
5. passenger overload
6. misuse of government vehicles
7. safety belts (front and rear)
8. all other relevant offences
9. illegal number plates
10. use of cell phones
11. stray animals
This resulted into the following achievements:
* A total of 15 293 drivers were caught for various traffic law offences
* 711 people were arrested for drunken driving
* 579 stray animals were confiscated on N2, N6, R61 and R63
* Summons to a value of R1.5 million were issued for various traffic law
offences.
These figures are expected to increase as the task team is expected to do
its final round this coming weekend.
