Free State Health industrial strike action update

Industrial action update

14 June 2007

In the aftermath of the strike action yesterday, most of the services
rendered by health facilities in the Free State are returning to normal. We
have however had disruptions in our service delivery at the Bongani Regional
Hospital in Welkom where the entrance to the hospital was blocked. Intimidation
of healthcare workers in this facility has taken place and subsequently the
assistance of the South African Police Service was called in. An incident also
took place at the Thusanong District Hospital in Odendaalsrus where
intimidation of healthcare workers occurred and 29 officials were arrested.

The situation at the Botshabelo District Hospital has normalised with the
assistance provided by the South African National Defence Force. The South
African Police Service is also keeping a strong presence at the hospital.
Services at the Dr JS Moroka Hospital in Thaba Nchu has stabilised with
clinical services as well as nursing in the wards resuming. The South African
National Defence Force (SANDF) is assisting with patient care and support
services. At the Tokollo District Hospital in Heilbron, there is a disruption
in the support services of the hospital as well as clinical nursing care but
the SANDF was approached for assistance.

In view of health officials participating in illegal strike action, more
than 240 letters of termination of employment are being issued to affected
officials. This number might increase depending on the duration of the
industrial action. We would like to issue a stern warning that decisive action
will be taken on intimidators and striking officials if they do not adhere to
the 100-metre rule which governs picketing in terms of the Labour Relations
Act. The South African Police Service will enforce the law.
