On Friday, 27 February 2009, the Independent Development Trust (IDT) will
officially hand over toilet blocks built for 10 schools in Qwaqwa, Thabo
Mofutsanyana District to the Free State Department of Education.
The IDTs mud schools programme is a nationally implemented programme. The
IDT made available an amount of R150 million towards the creation of a
partnership with government to eradicate mud schools in the country. The Free
State was allocated an amount of five million rands by IDT to be spent mainly
on the eradication of pit latrines especially in the Eastern Free State.
The quality of education delivered to learners especially in rural and
marginalised areas is severely hampered by the poor quality of the physical
infrastructure that currently exists. Mud schools that were constructed in the
past out of necessity are being reduced to unstable, weak and unsafe structures
that are fanning the cycle of poverty in various provinces. To this end the
government has resolved to eradicate mud schools in affected areas. Such
resolve is in line with the IDT business model which bridges the gap between
service agents and communities.
The Independent Development Trust will contribute to the replacement of
existing mud school structures with conventional school infrastructure thus
providing beneficiary communities with a holistic education environment within
the context of an integrated approach, the national priority list, community
involvement and job creation with a focus on women.
