20 April 2009
This programme was launched in 2006 and by 2011 over 1,5 million young
people will have taken part. The programme involves the connecting of schools
in Sub-Saharan Africa and the United Kingdom (UK). There are currently
partnerships involving 772 schools in total. In the UK over 130 000 students
and 11 000 teachers have participated in joint curriculum projects.
In the Free State province, two clusters of three schools (Cluster one
Eunice P/S, Legae P/S, Atang P/S and Cluster two, Ihobe P/S, Batho P/S and
Brandwag Primary School participate in this programme). They are connecting
with clusters in Wales, England, Kenya and Uganda.
The objective of this project is to:
* to develop a more positive attitude towards each otherâs countries / cultures
based on greater knowledge and the capacity and willingness to engage across
cultures, developing the skills necessary for successful intercultural
dialogue
* to enable young people to develop the skills, and create opportunities to act
as agents of positive social change
* to contribute to education policies that support internationalism and respect
the contribution of young people
The project is funded by the British Council. Educators from Wales and Kenya
are visiting the schools in Cluster one in Bloemfontein Free State from 20 to
24 April 2009 as part of the exchange. Bloemfontein schools will visit schools
in Wales and Kenya in 2010 and 2011 respectively. Cluster two schools in
Bloemfontein visited schools in England recently.
