Foreign Affairs on United Nations statement on sexual
orientation

South African Government statement on sexual orientation

8 January 2009

On 18 December 2008 Argentina read a statement on human rights and sexual
orientation and gender identity before the United Nations General Assembly
signed by 65 other countries.

South Africa supported the statement but was not a signatory to it. In
supporting the statement, South Africa was guided by the values enshrined in
our Constitution.

It is also important to note that over the years, there have been several
declarations that have been presented to the General Assembly and that South
Africa has supported without being a signatory.
