The Secretary to Cabinet, Rev Frank Chikane will unveil names of the
nominated recipients of National Orders Awards, to be bestowed by President
Kgalema Motlanthe on Friday, 27 March 2008.
The names will be unveiled during a media briefing scheduled to take place
as follows:
Date: Wednesday, 25 March 2008
Venue: Room 153, Media Centre, Union Buildings
Time: 14h00 (Media to arrive at 13h30)
NB: There will be a video link-up to Imbizo Centre in Cape Town
The national orders are the highest awards that the President bestows on
citizens and eminent foreign nationals in recognition of their prominent
contribution to nation building. This year marks the 13th National Orders
Awards ceremony.
The nominated recipients will be awarded national orders in the following
categories:
* The order of the Baobab: this recognises South African citizens who have
contributed to community service, business and economy, science, medicine and
technological innovation
* The order of Luthuli: this recognises South African citizens who have
contributed to the struggle for democracy, nation-building, building democracy
and human rights, justice and peace as well as for the resolution of
conflicts.
* The order of Companions of O R TAMBO: this recognises eminent foreign
nationals and other foreign dignitaries for friendship shown to South Africa.
It is therefore an order of peace, co-operation and active expression of
solidarity and support.
