MEC Cachalia launches Provincial Patroller Programme

11 July 2007

The MEC for Community Safety Firoz Cachalia today launched the Provincial
Patroller Programme in Sebokeng, where 350 patrollers were handed equipment
that includes reflector jackets, torches, boots and caps. This is part of the
take-charge roll out programme by the Department, which includes the
establishment of 26 patrol groups across Gauteng that seeks to ensure that
patrollers are supported and sustained. He reiterated the good job that
Sebokeng is doing and providing a model for other areas in the province. "If we
succeeded in Sebokeng we can surely succeed in Atteridgeville, Thokoza and
other areas" said MEC Cachalia. He further promised to provide the
following:

* accredited training through the South Africa Security Sector Education and
Training Authority (Sasseta)
* food parcels for volunteers to provide for their families
* transport vouchers to be able to attend meetings

The public launch was also supported by take-charge celebrity activists that
work with our Department. Maduvha from Muhvango and Deborah Fraser were in
attendance and encouraged and motivated the community to be part of the Take
Charge campaign.
