Cachalia to launch provincial patroller programme

11 July 2007

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Firoz Cachalia, will launch the
patroller programme in Sebokeng. This follows an announcement by Premier
Mbhazima Shilowa during the State of the Province address on 19 February 2007,
and subsequently by Cachalia to roll out patrollers.

During the launch the MEC will hand over equipment including jackets,
trousers, jackets, caps, boots and torches to 350 patrollers.

Sebokeng is one of the 26 precincts identified for the programme, and the
next six months will see the roll out of the 'Take Charge' campaign in other
areas, to encourage community participation, and to mobilise for participation
in developing a social movement against crime.
