open cycle gas turbines for Gourikwa, Mossel Bay and Ankerlig, Atlantis
1 October 2007
The Department of Public Enterprises would like to commend Eskom on its
efforts to increase the country's electricity capacity. The open cycle gas
turbines are a welcome addition to the utility's plant mix, and they are
crucial in assisting to alleviate higher energy demand pressures around the
country, and particularly in the Western Cape region.
Demand for electricity is expected to continue to escalate as the South
African economy expands, and as electricity supplier of last resort. Eskom has
the unenviable responsibility of ensuring that lack of capacity does not hinder
endeavours to boost economic growth levels and employment creation.
The department will continue to oversee the progress of Eskom's Build
Programme, and although energy demand will continue to soar, both locally and
globally, we are confident that Chief Executive Officer Jacob Maroga and his
team will continue to work flat out to ensure a more promising outlook for
security supply for the country.
