Various arrests made and action taken against Illegal, Unregulated and
Unreported (IUU) fishing
You are hereby invited to join us in welcoming back the Sarah Baartman,
South Africa's off-shore environmental protection vessel from a Southern
African Development Community (SADC) joint patrol with Mozambique, Tanzania,
Kenya and South Africa participating. The Sarah Baartman was at sea for more
than 30 days and made arrests in Mozambique, South Africa and Tanzania.
Date: Thursday, 26 March 2009
Time: 7h30 for 8h00 (the Sarah Baartman will steam in earlier)
Venue: On-board the Sarah Baartman vessel, Quay 500, Cape Town Harbour,

Please note: due to security reasons confirmation is essential to allow
entry to Quay 500 and on board the Sarah Baartman vessel, please provide
vehicle registration numbers with confirmation.
Notes on the Sarah Baartman vessel
The offshore vessel can carry 18 crew, 4 cadets and seven fishery
inspectors. The vessel is 83 metres in length and has a beam of 13 metres. It
has a range of 7500 nautical miles at 15 knots and can remain at sea for up to
45 days. Top speed is in excess of 20 knots. In addition to its fishery
protection duties the vessel is also equipped to carry out oil pollution
countermeasure work.
The vessel is further equipped for Search and Rescue work, fire fighting and
limited towing duties. The vessel has a helicopter deck and is capable of
refuelling these craft at sea. In addition there is a small hospital and
facilities for accommodating survivors in the event of a marine casualty. The
vessel is classified for unrestricted service and is also deployed for duties
off Marion and Prince Edward Islands as and when required.
