Environmental Affairs and Tourism to host local government
indaba on tourism in Cape Town

16 January 2009

Tourism at a local government level will come under the spotlight during the
local government indaba on tourism in Cape Town from 26 to 27 January 2009.

Hosted by the national Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, the
conference will see over 400 delegates from across the country converge under
the theme, "unlocking tourism potential at a local sphere of government".

This inaugural conference, with delegates from the three spheres of
government and stakeholders, seeks to highlight the importance of local
government in tourism development and to provide a platform for engagement,
leadership and the sharing of best practices in order to deliver the tourism
mandate towards 2010 and beyond.

Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, will
officially open the conference on Monday, 26 January 2009 at 10h00.

The South African Local Government Association will elaborate on the
challenges facing local government to deliver on tourism. Urban and rural case
studies at local tourism level will also be presented at the indaba.
