Environmental Affairs and Tourism to host environmental compliance and
enforcement Lekgotla, 16 to 20 Feb

Sharpening the sting

9 February 2009

The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism will host the third
Environmental compliance and enforcement Lekgotla under the theme “Sharpening
the Sting” at the Mpekweni Beach Resort in Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape from
16 - 20 February 2009.

The focus of the Lekgotla will be on developing strategies to overcome
challenges and to significantly increase the impact of the work of the
Inspectorate. Commonly known as Green Scorpions, the Environmental Management
Inspectorate (EMI), was launched in 2006 and is a network of designated
Environmental Management Inspectors (EMIs) from various partner institutions
involved in environmental compliance, monitoring and enforcement. Compliance
and enforcement issues include biodiversity, waste pollution, environmental
impact assessments and marine and coastal management.

The 18th of February will be characterised by the signing of the standard
operating procedure for co-operation between the Inspectorate and the (South
African Police Services) SAPS; the presentation of excellence awards to
deserving inspectors, investigators and prosecutors, the launch of the 2007/08
compliance and enforcement report and the launch of the authorisation manual.
Media is invited to the gala dinner on 18 February 2009 at 18h00.

Amongst others, the conference will be attended by representatives from the
South African Police Service (SAPS), National Prosecuting Authority (NPA),
South African Revenue Service (SARS), Customs and the United Kingdom
Environment Agency.
