The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism announces
the appointment of its Chief Operating Officer

Mr D J van Schalkwyk was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer in the
Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism with effect form 1 April 2009,
after acting in the position for a period of 10 months. Mr van Schalkwyk
commenced working in the public service in 1974, and joined the Department of
Environmental Affairs and Tourism as a senior manager in 1998.

During his longstanding career with DEAT, Mr van Schalkwyk served as
co-ordinator and member of several study tours for members of Parliament, to
Antarctica and the Prince Edward Islands and other overseas countries on
matters relating to the department’s core mandates. He managed the
Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCA) programme in the context of the New
Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) environmental initiatives.

Mr van Schalkwyk served as a programme manager for the establishment and
administration for several transfrontier parks which involved negotiations with
the presidencies and ministries of environmental matters of South Africa,
Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia which entailed the establishment of
the governance process and the development of infrastructure at the different
border posts.

He was engaged in consultation with SANParks top management on the TFCA
programme, including the annual budgetary process to national government, park
expansion programmes and land matters and the people and parks programme.

The Director-General of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism,
Ms Nosipho Ncgaba, welcomed the appointment of Mr van Schalkwyk. Given his vast
experience, this appointment is expected to provide continuity in the
management of the department’s operations.
