Emergency Medical Rescue Services under the provincial Department of Health
is embarking on Phase Two of the recruit programme for emergency care
practitioners in basic life support. This will also include training in
Emergency Medical Dispatch and advanced driving training. This follows the
success of Phase One of the programme last year, which saw 50 recruits being
given certificates in Basic Life Support after successfully completing their
training. These recruits are now employed as paramedics in the Emergency
Medical Rescue Services. This programme started as a pilot project and is being
driven by Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS).
The programme runs as part of an expansion of service programme targeted at
unemployed matriculants. Selected unemployed candidates from throughout
KwaZulu-Natal who have not been presented with an opportunity to further their
studies at tertiary level are considered for the programme. The training
programme will run for three months and candidates will be trained by the
Department's College of Emergency Care.
* Applicants must be in possession of a Grade 12 (matriculation)
qualification * Have a valid Code 10 drivers licence and a valid PDP
(persons).
* Applicants must be willing to undertake and sign a contract with the
department.
* An ability to communicate in isiZulu will be an added advantage.
The programme is targeting to recruit female candidates. Trainees will have
to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa when they
successfully complete the course.
