Electoral Commission to host prayer service, 16 Apr

Gauteng elections prayer service

15 April 2009

The Gauteng Electoral Commission in conjunction with the South African
Council of Churches would like to invite members of the media to an
Inter-denominational prayer service. The prayer service is aimed at praying for
peaceful and tolerant national and provincial elections on 22 April.

The Electoral Commission recognises a significant influence that the church
has shown and continues to show in the development of democracy in South
Africa. The church has made an immeasurable contribution to the transition
towards democratic rule and the adoption of a Constitution founded on ideals of
a humane and caring society. Therefore the Electoral Commission believes that
the church has a major role to play in encouraging all political parties and
the electorates to conduct themselves in a manner conducive to free and fair
elections.
