Electoral Commission to hold municipal by-elections, 28 Jan

Municipal by-elections scheduled for 28 January 2009

Municipal ward by-elections will take place on Wednesday, 28 January 2009 in
the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and the Northern
Cape.

The Electoral Commission confirmed that 27 vacant wards will be contested by
106 candidates of whom 13 are independent candidates while the other 93
represent 12 political parties.

In the Eastern Cape by-elections will take place in two wards:

* Ward 15 in Nkonkobe Municipality [Alice] – EC127 will be contested by
Tobile Limba of the African National Congress; Lizeka Eunice Nodayizana of the
Congress of the People; and Mthuthuzeli Gordon Ntozini of the Pan Africanist
Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

* Ward 2 in Nxuba Municipality [Adelaide]– EC128 will be contested by George
de Lange, an independent candidate; Aenle Leo Dayile of the Adelaide Residents
Association; Thando Nelson Ngetu of the African National Congress; and Lulamile
Ndala of the Congress of the People.

The ward was previously represented by the Adelaide Residents Association
and became vacant due to the expulsion of the councillor by the party.

In the Free State by-elections will take place in four wards:

* Ward 32 in Mangaung Municipality [Bloemfontein]– FS172 will be contested
by Mongezi Filiph Tafana, an independent candidate; Ntsebeng Joyce Ntahane of
the African Christian Democratic Party; Paseka Paulus Machelebeta of the
African National Congress; Rammejana Koos Motshabi of the Black Consciousness
Party; and Nthabiseng Augustine Nkanyane of the Dikwankwetla Party of South
Africa.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward 34 in Mangaung Municipality [Bloemfontein]– FS172 will be contested
by Mojalefa Jeremiah Mohlouoa, an independent candidate; Lethusang Matheu
Khanlienyane of the African Christian Democratic Party; Mohanoe Ben Mohlouoa of
the African National Congress; Pule Abraham Mosoeu of the Black Consciousness
Party; and Molelekeng Anna Mphomela of the Dikwankwetla Party of South
Africa.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward 37 in Mangaung Municipality [Bloemfontein]– FS172 will be contested
by Selloane Emily Taaibosch, an independent candidate; Pule Joseph Rampai of
the African Christian Democratic Party; Motshabi David Hlujane of the African
National Congress; Khokhoma Jakop Motsi of the Black Consciousness Party; and
Moipone Maria Soaisa of the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward nine in Setsoto Municipality [Senekal] – FS191 will be contested by
Ramotsili Albert Mothibeli, an independent candidate; Mojabeng Celestina Nakasi
of the African National Congress; and Evert Philip Strydom of the Democratic
Alliance.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

In Gauteng by-elections will take place in two wards:

* Ward 25 in Mogale City Municipality [Krugersdorp] – GT481 will be
contested by Jerry Dube Mosalagae Motshoane of the African Christian Democratic
Party; and Ntsetsere Voster Molele of the African National Congress.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward 19 in City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] – JHB will be contested by
Sello Issac Tladi, an independent candidate; Maurice Itani Rambau of the
African Christian Democratic Party; Michael Ncedane of the African National
Congress; Mothela Adophus Masithe of the Azanian People’s Organisation; Sharon
Sister Nxumalo of the Inkatha Freedom Party; Lawrence Charlie Nyatumbo of
Operation Khanyisa Movement; and Stanley Mthunzi of the Pan Africanist Congress
of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

In KwaZulu-Natal by-elections will take place in two wards:

* Ward five in Dannhauser Municipality [Durnacol] – KZN254 will be contested
by Zakhele Samuel Ngubeni of the African National Congress; and Agirippa
Bhekinkosi Langa of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became
vacant due to the death of the councillor.

* Ward 12 in Ubuhlebezwe Municipality [Ixopo] – KZN434 will be contested by
Thulani Conrad Dlamini of the African National Congress; and Mhlombeseni Amos
Ngubane of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became
vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

In Limpopo by-elections will take place in two wards:

* Ward seven in Greater Tzaneen Municipality [Tzaneen] – LIM333 will be
contested by Simon Bradley Mokhwaripa of the African Christian Democratic
Party; Makwale Daniel Mabape of the African National Congress; Masale Maureen
Rakgwale of the Congress of the People; and Sethakgale Esther Mokwena of the
Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward six in Musina Municipality [Messina] – LIM341 will be contested by
Lucias Cosmo Manda of the African Christian Democratic Party; Violet Aamina
Milanzi of the African National Congress; Luvhengo Irene Magau of the Azanian
People’s Organisation; Dickson Pesulo of the Congress of the People; Johann
Ellis of the Democratic Alliance and Masauko Pesulo of the Pan Africanist
Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

In the Northern Cape by-elections will take place in 15 wards:

* Ward three in Kamiesberg Municipality [Garies] – NC064 will be contested
by Jakob Hermanus Pemiedie of the African National Congress; Jasper Jacobus
Kordom of the Congress of the People; and Lionel van Wyk of the Independent
Democrats.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward three in Kai! Garib Municipality [Keimoes] – NC082 will be contested
by Sarah Jacob of the African National Congress; Francis Coetzee of the
Congress of the People; and Andries Johannes Brand of the Independent
Democrats.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward four in Kai !Garib Municipality [Keimoes] – NC082 will be contested
by Jan Paul Thomas van Rooi, an independent candidate; Pieter Johan Scheepers
of the African National Congress; Perpetua Vincentina Swartz of the Congress of
the People; and April van der Westhuizen of the Independent Democrats.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward five in Kai !Garib Municipality [Keimoes] – NC082 will be contested
by Jasmine Junita Lakey and Martie Burger, both independent candidates; George
Sias Rooi of the African National Congress; Walter Thillo van Eeden of the
Congress of the People; and Christina Steenkamp of the Independent
Democrats.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward three in KHARA HAIS Municipality [Upington] – NC083 will be contested
by Ellie Allies of the African National Congress; Alvin Frederick du Plessis of
the Congress of the People; and Sarah du Plessis of the Independent
Democrats.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward five in Khara Hais Municipality [Upington] – NC083 will be contested
by Johannes Leonard Sinako Plaatjies of the African National Congress; Katrina
de Wee of the Congress of the People; and Jan Maritz of the Independent
Democrats.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward seven in Khara Hais Municipality [Upington] – NC083 will be contested
by Sammy J Williams, an independent candidate; Michael Segede of the African
National Congress; Elsie Mokgotla of the Congress of the People; and Jakobus
Greeff of the Independent Democrats.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward one in !Kheis Municipality [Groblershoop] – NC084 will be contested
by Piet Mpelwane of the African Christian Democratic Party; Samuel Esau of the
African National Congress; Pieter Albertus Eksteen of the Congress of the
People; and Luciano Llewellyn Freehein Freeman of the Independent
Democrats.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward two in !KHEIS Municipality [Groblershoop] – NC084 will be contested
by Richard Matsila of the African Christian Democratic Party; Lena Gous-Noble
of the African National Congress; Elizabeth Cloete of the Congress of the
People; and Lea Magdelene Loraine Moses of the Independent Democrats.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward four in! Kheis Municipality [Groblershoop] – NC084 will be contested
by Trudie Esau of the African National Congress; and Koos Esau of the Congress
of the People.

* Ward one in Sol Plaatje Municipality [Kimberley] – NC091 will be contested
by Maria Rachel Snyman, an independent candidate; Hendrik Swak of the African
Christian Democratic Party; Vaughan Victor Settley of the African National
Congress; Rosie Annie Ludick of the Congress of the People; and Jacobus Koos
Job of the Independent Democrats.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward seven in Sol Plaatje Municipality [Kimberley] – NC091 will be
contested by Ronney Tsholohelo Morwe of the African National Congress;
Dimakatso Prospecia Motlhokwane of the Azanian People’s Organisation; Patrick
Garret Matika of the Congress of the People; and Teko Christopher Ngobeza of
the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward 13 in Sol Plaatje Municipality [Kimberley] – NC091 will be contested
by Setokozi Piet Mocholo and Solomon Modisakeng, both independent candidates;
Lephallo Ephraim Mafooa of the African National Congress; Ngungunyana Cedrick
Nodoba of the Azanian People’s Organisation; Collin Moremedi of the Congress of
the People; George Andrew du Plooy of the Independent Democrats; and Vincent
Vincentio Johnson Mabuyangwe of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward 18 in Sol Plaatje Municipality [Kimberley] – NC091 will be contested
by Mxholisi Michael Rhadebe of the African Christian Democratic Party; Eunice
Mosele Mathe of the African National Congress; and Joseph Mazabane of the
Congress of the People.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward three in Phokwane Municipality [Hartswater] – NC094 will be contested
by Flora Ontsheketse Pitso of the African National Congress; Kenalemang Anna
Mothobi of the Azanian People’s Organisation; Motlagosebatho Susan Halter of
the Congress of the People; and Jennifer Kelehe of the Independent
Democrats.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and
became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 111 549 voters
are registered in the 27 wards and 99 voting districts where by-elections will
be taking place.
