The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Independent Electoral Commission
(IEC), Mr Mosotho Moepya, said in Pretoria today (8 February) that the African
National Congress won five of the eight wards contested in the municipal ward
by-elections of 7 February 2007. Of the remaining three wards, two went to the
Democratic Alliance and one to the Christiana Belasting Betalers Vereniging in
the North West.
Voter turnout varied between 11,96 percent and 59,93 percent with an average
of 41,06 percent.
The only seat that was not retained by the party that won it in the 2006
municipal elections was Ward 6 in Lekwa-Teemane [Christiana] � NW396, North
West. The new councillor is Daniel Jacobus Muller of the Christiana Belasting
Betalers Vereniging. In the 2006 municipal elections the seat went to the
African National Congress.
The new African National Congress councillors are:
* Nobuntu Mtsi in Ward 26 in Mbhashe [Idutywa] � EC12, Eastern Cape
* McBright Bongani Sibiya in Ward 8 in uMngeni [Howick] � KZN222,
KwaZulu-Natal
* Nare Elias Mashilo in Ward 17 in Aganang [Moletji/Matlala] � LIM352,
Limpopo
* Mandla Isaac Mabala in Ward 3 in Lekwa-Teemane [Christiana] � NW396, North
West
* Baitlotli Magdeline Mlangeni in Ward 18 in Rustenburg [Rustenburg] � NW373,
also North West.
Both wards contested in the Western Cape went to the Democratic
Alliance:
* Sarika Nortje in Ward 1 in Beaufort West [Beaufort West] � WC053
* Margaretha Haywood in Ward 74 in CPT � City of Cape Town [Cape Town].
