Education on teaching guidelines for parents and volunteers during
strike

Department provides guidelines to parents and volunteers

1 June 2007

In anticipation of labour action by teachers, the Department of Education
has produced a set of guidelines for parents and volunteers who may be called
in to assist in taking care of children who do report to school, or for parents
to use if their children are not at school.

Sets of guidelines have been prepared for the Foundation Phase (Grades R
3), the Intermediate Phase (Grades 4-7) or the Senior Phase (Grades 7-9). These
have been sent to District offices, and are also available on the departmental
website (http://www.education.gov.za). Schools which
require copies can call the department's toll-free line on 0800 202 933.

The guidelines are not intended to replace the teacher, and are not designed
to ensure ordinary teaching and learning. They should ensure that children
remain active and protected during the strike, and that they do not become the
victims of any action.
