2009
19 March 2009
The Minister of Education received the Torch of Peace on 15 January 2009,
from the Minister of Transport. Since then, the torch of peace has moved from
province to province, championed by the MECs of Education. In each province the
torch of peace has helped to draw together learners, educators, parents,
government departments and communities, to focus on creating safe and caring
schools.
Having travelled a distance of 26 500 kilometres between 15 January 2009 and
13 March 2009, the torch of peace will be received by the Director-General of
Education, Mr Duncan Hindle from the Superintendent-General of the Western Cape
Education Department, Mr Ron Swartz, on 20 March 2009.
Thereafter, the Director-General will hand the torch of peace over to the
Director-General of Justice and Constitutional Development, Advocate Menzi
Simelane, to mark Human Rights Day.
The Torch of Peace forms a link between the 16 Days of Activism Campaign and
other major national campaigns against crime and violence. It is part of the
365 Days of No Violence against Women and Children awareness campaign and
promotes safety and human dignity.
On this day, selected learners from the Girls Education Movement and Boys
Education Movement clubs in Veritas Secondary School, Soweto; Lingitshudu High
School, Ekangala; Phefeni Secondary School, Soweto; Khutlo-Tharo Secondary
School; Ingqayizivele Secondary School â Tembisa and Steve Tshwete Secondary
School, Olievenhoutbosch, will make inputs on how they can implement school
safety initiatives.
