Eastern Cape Youth Commission (ECYC) hosts OR Tambo District
Youth Summit

The Eastern Cape Youth Commission will host a Youth Summit in the OR Tambo
District from 7 to 9 December 2007, at the King Sabatha Dalindyebo Further
Education and Training (FET) College, Cicira Campus, Mthatha.

The summit will feature speakers such as Defence Minister Mosioua Lekota,
Eastern Cape MEC for Safety, Liaison, Roads and Transport Mr Thobile Mhlahlo,
MEC for Local Government Ms Thoko Xasa, MEC for Public Works Mr Christian
Martin, National Youth Commission Chairperson Nomi Nkondlo, representatives
from Umsobomvu Youth Fund and Eastern Cape Socio-Economic Consultative
Council.

The purpose of this summit is to create a platform for youth (especially
from rural areas) engagement and interaction with the ECYC, government
(provincial and local) and other relevant stakeholders that have
responsibilities in youth development. The OR Tambo Youth Summit follows
similar outreach programmes previously held in the Nelson Mandela Metro and
Chris Hani District Municipality where much progress has been made in
responding to some of the challenges and concerns expressed by youth in the
various engagements. Government departments continue to engage with all the
relevant reports from these previous interactions in order to find lasting
solutions to the problems raised.

Key objectives:

* provide insight into the work of the ECYC, provincial youth development
challenges and priorities
* provide insight into the National Youth Policy 2007 imperatives and
processes
* provide key information and opportunity for discussion on the means and
strategies of advancing youth development in the province and OR Tambo District
Municipality in particular
* enhance and give guidance and information on the formation and functionality
of Local and District youth councils
* mobilise stakeholders and partners in youth development to exhibit and
present to youth the various programmes and initiatives aimed at empowering
young people develop an OR Tambo Youth sector input into the Provincial Youth
Development Plan
* develop a youth programme of action for OR Tambo for ECYC planning and
lobbying.
