Ms Lungi Ngcingwana, Chief Information Officer, and Eastern Cape Office of
the Premier was amongst women that were honoured at the Eastern Cape Women in
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) awards. The ceremony was held at
the Regeant Hotel on Tuesday, 31 March 2009 in East London.
The Eastern Cape Women in ICT Awards recognise top women in ICT in the
Eastern Cape, this includes senior industry professionals and emerging business
women. Amongst others, Carol Hall, Managing Executive for Vodacom Eastern Cape
and Amanda Magwetshu of Corporate Services for Buffalo City Municipality
received recognition at the awards.
A need was identified to promote women in the ICT in conjunction with our
partners in the corporate world: Black Information Technology Forum (BITF) and
State Information Technology Agency (SITA). The women in ICT Awards came in
that light and aims to further the mission of balancing gender in the field of
Information and Communication Management.
The awards further aim to counter the prevailing and unsatisfactory
statistics of women in the Information and Communication Industry. Director
General Dr Sibongile Mutwa in her keynote address noted that due to the
discriminatory policies of the past in our own country, women of all races were
prevented from achieving their full economic potential. As a result of this
backlog to this day fewer women hold senior positions in government and the
private sector compared to their male counterparts
âThe exclusion of women in ICT continues to leave a large gap in economic
participation that deprives women of equal opportunities in a range of
competitive roles in the private sector, in particular.â Added Dr Sibongile
Mutwa.
