Eastern Cape Roads and Transport on Easter Weekend and Arrive
Alive

Arrive alive strategy of the Provincial Roads and
Transport.

6 April 2009

With only few days to the Easter Weekend, moves are afoot in the Eastern
Cape Province to rollout a comprehensive law enforcement plan as part of the
arrive alive strategy of the Provincial Roads and Transport.

In response to unlawful conduct by scorers of motorist on the road, the
department has put together task teams to stem out accident causing conduct on
our roads. The task teams include, stray animals, drunken driving.

It is such efforts that cut numbers of people involved in car accidents
during the summer holidays by 30% in the Eastern Cape. As we are preparing to
provide traffic management service to our people who will be travelling to
their places of worship, holiday destinations and back to their homes, we
appeal to all road users, especially motorists to obey the law or DIE POPPE SAL
DANS! As we continue implementing our road safety measures.

The department is concerned by the seriousness of offences committed by our
motorists on our roads these include, drunken driving, driving without a
driver’s license, speeding, road rage and many other careless conduct.

It is our mandate to provide this service to our people, but those who break
the law will not escape the wrath of the law and of our traffic officers. The
department goes to this holiday season hoping to reduce number of road
accidents, fatalities, injuries through road safety and effective traffic law
enforcement on our roads.

During the summer holidays, a serious number of motorists were arrested for
attempting to bribe traffic officers while huge numbers of drivers were caught
driving under the heavy influence of alcohol. This indicates to us as the
department the lack of compliance with traffic laws. Our traffic officers are
not on leave, they are working on our roads to protect the nation but those
that will try to dampen our efforts, will face our wrath. We are not going to
allow a few to bring misery to families and communities by causing accidents.
Our focus will be on all modes of transport on our roads while we accentuate on
busses, taxis, private vehicles and the government fleet.

We urge members of the public to report all road accidents and objects lying
on the road to our provincial customer care centre by calling: 0800 644644.
Those who wish to check their Traffic fines before they travel should visit our
website to view their fines by logging onto http://www.ectransport.gov.za.
