Eastern Cape on rectification of defective houses

Rectification of defective houses in Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo
municipalities back on track

17 February 2009

Work has resumed of rectifying over one thousand houses defective houses in
Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo district municipalities which were blocked in 2000 due
to poor workmanship, planning, house enrolment and non-availability of internal
services such as water reticulation, project enrolment and poor top structure.
A new contractor is already working on site fixing the defective houses and
rebuilding completely damaged structures in Mount Alyiff, Mount Frere and
Flagstaff. Some of these houses were demolished and had to be rebuilt.

Rectification in Chris Hani, Buffalo, Cacadu and other areas in the province
began last year. The project which amounts to million of rands will see
hundreds of families have their houses rectified. In Mount Alyiff 700 houses,
in Flagstaff 503 houses and in Mount Frere 303 houses are being rectified.

The total cost for the rectification of these housing projects costs over
100 million rand. This amount is from the R552,172 million remaining in the
budget which will be spent on the following categories of acceleration projects
(flagship projects, current running projects, new projects, land acquisition,
emergency housing, regularization and rectification).

After site and inspection visits to determine the extent of the damages by a
technical team from the provincial and national government, a contractor was
appointed in December last year and is now working on all sites.
