Fifty three employees from the Kouga Local Service Area (LSA) received free
screening for breast and cervical cancer at a Wellness Day held on 30 October
2007 at Humansdorp Country club.
This was an initiative by the Eastern Cape Department of Health's Employee
Wellness Programme, of taking health services to the employees of the
department.
Other free services rendered during the event include eye testing, ear
testing, throat screening, blood pressure examination, diabetes testing,
voluntary counselling and testing and reflexology services.
Employees from the LSA were impressed with the services brought to them and
felt that the department is making an effort in trying to maintain a healthy
workforce.
Training co-ordinator from Kouga LSA M Kolele mentioned that the event was
the first of its kind to be conducted in the Kouga LSA (especially the
reflexology service) and felt that it is going to help in the well-being of the
employees of the Department at large.
"I think we are ready for change because we always thought reflexology was
only done by white people, but now blacks are also doing it," he said.
Deputy Director, Employee Wellness Programme, Lulama Matu encouraged the
employees to take responsibility of their wellbeing.
"The department is investing in the employees to be able to meet its
mandate," she said.
