Eastern Cape kids targeted in health Week

25 March 2009

Some 11 000 children are being targeted for vaccination and other
interventions in a health week in the Ukahlamba District of the Eastern Cape,
the provincial health department said on Tuesday, “The district hit headlines
two years ago over a spate of baby deaths from diarrhoea.”

Department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said “About 60 health workers, operating
in teams, were concentrating on an area of Ukahlamba that included the towns of
Sterkspruit, Lady Grey, Dordrecht and Rossouw. Children up to five years old
were being given polio, measles and diarrhoea immunisations, as well as being
dewormed and given vitamin A.”

Kupelo said, “The campaign, part of a national initiative, was funded by the
United Nations' children’s fund.”
