interns
7 December 2007
The Eastern Cape Department of Health has recruited a second batch of
interns from different areas in the province.
This batch has assumed duties on Tuesday, 4 December 2007, and will be
placed in different areas such as Supply Chain Management, Communications,
Strategic Planning, Research and Training and Development.
According to Deputy Director, Learnerships and Internships, Mrs X Sikwebu,
the reason behind the recruitment of interns is to assist the unemployed
graduates to gain the necessary experience to be able to enter the
workplace.
Mrs Sikwebu also mentioned that 130 of the last batch of interns has been
absorbed and are now permanently employed because they have proved that they
are hard workers and have been trained very well. The department did not want
to lose them as they were valuable assets, she added.
The MEC for Health, Mrs Nomsa Jajula, mentioned that the department has
decided to give these young adults an opportunity and to train them in the
various areas which they studied for and they are also given a stipend so that
they can earn some money while they are in training. "We have 300 interns in
our system and we endeavour to absorb some in posts which are applicable to
their areas of study, training and expertise", she said.
The main focus this year was in the Corporate Service Centre (CSC), reason
being to cut their cost implications and to give them a chance of rendering
health care services in their communities and also to make sure that their
impact is also felt at the district level.
"We are in a process of forming partnership with the private sector so that
their employability does not focus only in the public sector", concluded Mrs
Sikwebu.
