The Eastern Cape health department owes its former employees service cash
benefits, it said on Tuesday. The department had recently established that
it owed an unconfirmed amount of cash benefits to former employees, ranging
from doctors to cleaners and other general workers, spokesman Sizwe Kupelo
said.
"We appeal to all former employees to contact our Bisho office to check if
they are owed anything or not. We will only require their name, identity number
and their salary slips to do the check," he said. Kupelo said in the case
of former employees who had died, their relatives would need to produce the
same details. Former employees need to come forward before 15 February.
"In March this year we will also be paying current employees their salaries
manually to verify their existence. This is to check for ghost employees on our
payroll." Kupelo said this was part of the department's process of
updating its internal systems. No "alarming incident" had sparked the move, he
added.
Any former employee wanting to see if they were owed any cash benefits
by the department could call this number: 040 608 1536.
