Eastern Cape Health on nurses pledging ceremony

Lilitha nurses make pledge of service

4 February 2009

As a way to curb the national shortage of nurses, the Department of Health's
Lilitha College presented a group of professionals who will be joining the team
of professional nurses across the province at a pledging ceremony held at the
Christian Centre in East London. The Lilitha College came into existence in
April 2004 and since then the college has been phasing out programmes for
students.

"Today we present to you the first group who joined after the college was
formed, they are making the pledge of service to say they are ready and
prepared to serve the communities, said Mrs Madubela who is the Acting College
Head. They were also urged to fly the Lilitha Flag high and be aware that a
health profession is a cornerstone of the health service and nurses are also
the backbone of the health system.

Chief Operations Officer, Mr Zitumane who gave the keynote address on behalf
of the MEC, Ms Majodina said as health professionals one needs to take charge
and make a contribution on a daily basis. "You need to even take responsibility
of someone else's work," he said. Ziyanda Mkohliswa
