The Eastern Cape Department of Health welcomed 580 nursing students in a
function held on 19 March 2009 at the East London Christian Centre.

The students started the first year of their four year programme and the
function marked the finishing of their induction programme.

They came from East London campus, Port Elizabeth campus, Mthatha campus,
Lusikisiki campus and Queenstown campus, some of the students come from service
and were granted study leave and some came from the community.

The Human Resources(HR) Unit explained HR related issues and pledged to
render quality services to the students at all times to make sure that they get
everything they deserve.

Chief Operations Officer, Mr PG Zitumane welcomed the students and
encouraged them to live a purpose driven life. “We hope that you are here to
serve and nursing to you is a calling, which is what you need to be able to
treat people with empathy”, he said.

Zitumane also mentioned that the department had set up a task team which is
focusing on the functionality of the Lilitha College looking at all the aspects
that will enable the college to operate successfully.
