An off-duty senior nurse was killed in a collision involving three vehicles,
the Eastern Cape health department said on Monday.
Spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the 31 year old nurse, based at the St Barnabas
Hospital in Libode, died on Sunday night. "Her Chevrolet Aveo and another
vehicle collided with a truck on the R61 between Libode and Mthatha," said
Kupelo.
Kupelo said the jaws of life had to be used to remove the body from the
wreckage. Provincial Health MEC Nomsa Jajula said she was shocked at the
nurse's death.
"I am devastated. The province is faced with a severe shortage of health
professionals and a death of any health professional, is one death too many,"
she said in a statement.
