What do the Eastern Cape Department of Education, South African Police
Service and South African College School have in common?
All of the above with the assistance of other like institutions are working
together to address the safety of the children not only within the school
boundaries but outside the boundaries of the school environment as well.
For the Eastern Cape Education Department, safety of children in schools is
one of the main responsibilities that must carry out.
âBefore anyone can begin to think in the lines of learner achievements, the
environment in which teaching and learning needs to occur have to be
conducive,â says Further Education and Training (FET) Band and Extra Curricular
Programmes Director Felix Mbete.
With safety of our schools depended on everyone working together, Mbete
alludes the involvement of other like spirited institutions as most vital and
of the greatest significance in determining a meaningful outcomes with school
safety.
With school safety awareness day taking place on Friday, Mbete said, "It is
for this reason that [various organisations] would be playing prominent roles
in the programme of the day."
The awareness day is expected to be a high profiled event where all 23
districts will be taking part through their chosen representatives.
Preceding Friday's campaign has been the "Torch of Peace" an event that is
aimed at raising awareness yet again for all individuals including the learners
towards self respect, self pride and respecting others along with other
peopleâs properties.
With the sub theme, "school safety begins with me," Mbete says he hopes that
people will stand up to support the initiative by claiming responsibility for
the safety in their schools.
"The safety of our children is everybodyâs responsibility and it is for this
reason that everyone recommits to the pledge to protect and care for our
children," he said.
On 13 March 2009, school safety awareness day campaign will commence at
10h00 from Bhisho stadium where every member of the society is invited.
