Media statement

25 March 2009

The national Department of Agriculture in conjunction with the provincial
Agriculture Department invites you to the official launch of the Letsema /
Ilema programme, which is a call to people to go back to the fields.

The provincial department has already fenced and cultivated about 800 ha of
arable land that has not been cultivated for the last ten years. The department
planted maize on the fields of 800 families covering six villages in Lambasi
administration area at Ngquzaq Hill municipality in Lusikisiki.

It is the aim of the government to ensure that people are producing food in
a bid to fight poverty and under-development as well as stirring up rural
economic development through agricultural programmes like Letsema.

Through this programme it is expected that jobs will be created while people
will have food on their tables. The programme also aims at introducing
large-scale production of crop and vegetables, which may see rural people
selling their produce to both the national and international markets.

The Honourable Minister of Agriculture Lulu Xingwana as well provincial
Agriculture MEC Gugile Nkwinti are so enthusiastic about the programme and are
expected to attend this event.

Members of the media are invited this august event.
