Eastern Cape Agriculture to hand over agricultural tools, 26 Mar

Media statement

25 March 2009

The Department of Agriculture will officially hand over a harvester to
farmers in the Matatielle area that will benefit farmers living in Ongeleksnek
and Tselike farms as well as Menoaneng village.

The hand over of the equipment follows a plea made by these farmers to the
department during a visit by agriculture MEC Gugile Nkwinti to the farms and
the MEC is honouring his promise, where he vowed to ensure that they received
the harvester.

The farmers in this area are producing maize in large scale, so it was
essential for the department to supply them with the necessary machinery. The
handover of tractors as well as implements is part of the green revolution
strategy, which also ensures that farmers were trained to utilise the equipment
and use the temporary methods of planting the land.

The day will also see the official hand over of a piggery and a diary to a
farmer who was helped by the department to graduate from communal farming to
commercial farming.

The farmer, who is also participating in the department’s massive food
production programme, was helped with the basic pivot irrigation system that
has helped him to produce top of the range crops and vegetables.
