The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture brings service to
the community of Ducats

4 March 2009

The Department of Agriculture cordially invites all media houses to witness
the Department of Agriculture alleviating poverty to the Ducats community.

The event will be held at Ducats Location in East London on 6 March 2009 at
10h00.

The department took the initiative to listen to the needs of the Ducats
community, after receiving the letter from them. Fifty-eight (58) community
members registered their names to be put on the programme and we decided to
launch the programme to attract more people to register.

The launch will be graced by the presence of the honourable MEC Gugile
Nkwinti who will be delivering the keynote address on the day.

The department saw it necessary not only avail our services but also invite
our sister departments and business partners to this area, hence we notice
their needs are not only agriculturally based but they also seek basic
services.

Therefore, the following departments will be bringing services on wheels on
the day: Home Affairs, South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), South
African Police Service (SAPS), Social Development, Land Affairs, Health, CMR,
BCM, Umtiza, Farmarama and Department of Housing.

One of the key programmes of the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture is
to alleviate poverty through providing the disadvantaged community with
gardening tools, seeds, seedling, watering cans or hosepipes, spades and garden
forks.

All these gardening tools are given per households for free and we further
teach the recipients on how to prepare soil, plant and manage their garden
properly in order to sustain their families for a long period with the
programme.

The official in charge of the area will visit each household on a more
regular base to monitor the proceedings of the programme until the supervision
is no longer needed.
