E Rasool on appointment of V Petersen as acting Director General of
Western Cape

Premier Rasool appoints acting Director-General for Western
Cape

23 July 2007

Last week I announced the deployment of Dr Gilbert Lawrence to the
Department of Community Safety for a contract period of 4 years. Lawrence has
commenced with his work in a Department that carries the onus of our struggle
to protect the vulnerable and to respond decisively to the scourge of drugs,
crime and gangsterism in the Western Cape.

Lawrence, together with Community Safety Minister Leonard Ramatlakane will
also ensure a turnaround strategy within the Department to solidify its
administrative and financial management. Lawrence has done the re-engineering
of the Department of the Premier successfully and there is no doubt that he
will be as successful in the Department of Community Safety.

As a consequence of this deployment of Lawrence, I am appointing Virginia
Petersen as acting Director General of the Western Cape. She is a woman who has
shown a great appetite for dirtying her hands in implementing and delivering.
She has done so before in transforming the delivery of social security
efficiently and honestly, and she will now continue this delivery role for the
province as a whole. She will act until a Director-General is appointed, which
we anticipate to be before the end of 2007. Her first task is to accompany me
to the National Cabinet Lekgotla from 24 to 26 July 2007 in Pretoria.
